This review covers the period in December, 2020, when Coronavirus restrictions were in place but before sporting facilities across Switzerland were shut down by the authorities.
Just like any other public indoor swimming facility that I have experienced in Switzerland, Meilen Hallenbad is absolutely spotless. There are ample changing facilities and showers are at the right temperature. Staff at reception are friendly and helpful.
At the time, there was a cap on the numbers allowed into any Swiss swimming facility at any one time. So at 6 AM at Zurich's Hallenbad City there might be a queue of 50-100 people waiting to get in, at Meilen there would never be more than five or six.
In the early mornings the pool was laned off, with three normal lanes and one wide lane. The water surface is kept relatively smooth with proper wave suppression barriers. There is a narrow ledge to stand on at the end of each lane as the water is relatively deep at 1.8m. Each lane had on average two to four swimmers. There is a high standard of swimming, and lane discipline is good, perhaps due to lack of contention.
Pool toys such as floats, paddles and flippers are permitted.
In addition to the main pool there is a smaller diving pool and children's splash pool. I'm guessing that the latter would help to keep at least part of the main pool clear for serious swimming during peak times and when COVID restrictions are not in place.
Annual membership includes entrance to the lakeside outdoor swimming facility (Strandbäder) in summer.
