Facility Notes
The official YMCA of Greater Richmond visitor policy is that visitors must be accompanied by a sponsoring member. But when we called the Richmond Ys that we have listed on the site, just about every membership associate we spoke with offered some sort of accommodation, most often suggesting that visitors schedule a tour of the facility, after which a free, one-week pass will be issued - no local residency required. The "hitch" is that the tour must be scheduled in advance and it's limited to a single tour and pass. But, if you have the time, you can almost certainly make some sort of an arrangement. Facility Reviews
This is an OK place to swim if you want a somewhat relaxed workout. The pool isn't large, which I find inhibiting; it's choppy when there are four or more people swimming; and the lack of lane lines can be frustrating when the pool is busy. Between 5 and 7 P.M. is usually a bad time. Weekends are often busy, too. The water is warmer than pools where swim teams train - nice in the winter but not so great in the summer. The schedule changes regularly so call ahead.
This is an oddly configured pool: There are two lanes for activities; one, wide lap lane (1½ times normal size); and one, narrow lap lane (½ normal size). Despite this, I had a lane to myself for laps on weekend. There's a pace clock and equipment is available. Typical Y-friendly staff, huge locker room, great weight room.
