Facility Notes
There are several prerequisites to purchasing a pass to swim in a municipal swimming pool in Istanbul:
The first requirement is that you must have an Istanbulkart (Istanbul card). The Istanbulkart is a multi-use card that can be used for transportation, as a debit card, and as an identity card. The cards can be purchased for transportation use anywhere, but to use it as an ID card or a debit card, it must be personalized with a photograph and your personal data. More information about the Istanbul Kart can be found on its website HERE. The site is conveniently available in both English and Turkish.
When you have an Istanbulkart, you then can go to any of the city's 23 municipal swimming pools to complete an application for membership valid for that particular location and have a medical evaluation there. If everything is 'up to snuff' you then pay the Ł165, which gets you twelve passes that must be used within two months. If you use them up, you can reload your account online.
Reservations are required to swim at Istanbul's municipal pools. Reservations can be made online HERE (This site is, unfortunately, in Turkish only and, since we don’t have the credentials to make a reservation, we are not able to help you with navigating that site.)
It should be noted that a membership at one facility does not get you membership valid at any of the other facilities. If you want to swim at two pools, you must have memberships at both of them and you must purchase two, separate, Ł165, 12-visit passes.
It should also be noted that unsupervised lap/lane/length swimming is not something that's done in Istanbul's municipal swimming pools. All sessions include an element of instruction.
As mentioned, there are 23 swimming pools in Istanbul's municipal system. They can be found on a map on the interactive map of municipal sports facilities HERE . To isolate the facilities with pools, use the filter line immediately above the map, captioned Filtrele, and select the last item on the drop-down list "Yüzme" ("Swimming").
Finally, did we mention that as of February 27, 2023, the Ł165 cost of 12 swims is equivalent to US$8.73?
As of this writing (February, 2023), we have not identified which of our listings are in the City of Istanbul's municipal system, but we intend to do so as promptly as we can.
